Summary: (from goodreads) Divorce attorney Harper James can't catch a break. Bad enough that she runs into her ex-hubby, Nick, at her sister's destination wedding, but now, by a cruel twist of fate, she's being forced to make a cross-country road trip with him. And her almost-fiancé back at home is not likely to be sympathetic. Harper can't help that Nick has come blazing back into her life in all of his frustratingly appealing, gorgeous architect glory. But in Nick's eyes, Harper's always been the one. If they can only get it right this time, forever might be waiting -- just around the bend.
This a romantic fiction is about a couple that, even if they are the love of their live, Can’t seem to be together. Harper’s baggage from her mother abandoning her on her 13th birthday, made her a skeptic cynic about love and commitment and that led to her creating a wall around her heart. Nick struggles to prove himself worthy of his Dad by working all the time to try to forge a better life and dismisses her complaints of loneliness. Being so young when they married the first time, did not help and ended up in a divorce.
Destiny had other plans for them and after 12 years they find themselves questioning their love for each other. They embark on a road trip when she finds herself stranded after her half sister’s wedding to his step brother and he is her only way out . The writer tells the story from both sides and uses flashbacks to bring you into their previous struggles and shows the reasons for their actions. She makes you cry, fall in love and frustrates you to the point you want to jump in and slap someone silly so they can open their eyes. This is what a good writer does and Kristan Higgins does that, she immerses you in a good emotional love story.
Kristan Higgins Interview
OUaT: Which My One and Only character did you most enjoy writing and which one was the hardest to write?
I’d have to say it’s a tie between Harper and Nick. They were both the most enjoyable and the most difficult. Harper is so funny, and so complicated—she wants to believe in the best in people, but life hasn’t exactly been generous in showing her people better impulses. So she’s cynical, but she’s also ever hopeful to be proven wrong. Nick, on the other hand, is an idealist…he assumes everything’s great…right until it blows up in his face. The thing is, both of them are right. It was a real joy to examine them so deeply and figure out how a couple who loved each other so much could go down in flames as fast as they did when they were young…and what it would take to get them back together.
OUaT: Describe the book in 5 words.
Divorced couple undertakes road trip.
OUaT: Where do you plan or want your writing to go in the future? Will you stick with romance?
I love writing romance, though I think my books have a healthy dose of women’s fiction in them as well. To me, a story that’s only about a man and a woman getting together isn’t enough…we all have families, jobs, friends, responsibilities, insecurities, strengths…so I like dealing with those aspects, too. So for now, I’m quite happy doing what I do!
OUaT: If you can leave your readers one legacy, what would you want it to be?
Everyone deserves a great love story. I think that’s the overriding message of my books…a great love has to be earned, yes, but only by being generous, kind and open. You don’t have to be beautiful or a billionaire or have mad talents to get a memorable, heart-tugging, happily-ever-after love.
OUaT: What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I love to bake…love to ride my bike…love to go to cities and stare at buildings. I’m a movie buff, love the New York Yankees. Mostly, I love being with my kids and sainted husband.
OUaT: Give us 3 good facts to know about you. Be Creative!
1. I love to clean.
2. I’m godmother to six children (and counting) and I adore them all.
3. I’ve always wanted to save a life or deliver a baby.
OUaT: If you could jump inside any book and live in that world, which book would it be?
I think it would be Catch of the Day, as the coast of Maine holds a special place in my heart. I may be revisiting Gideon’s Cove again in the near future. But I used to nanny up there in the summers, and it’s so beautiful, that rocky shore, the salty air. I also loved Joe’s Diner. But all my settings would be a pleasure to visit, I think!
