Author Bio: Gretchen McNeil is an opera singer, writer and clown. Her YA horror/paranormal POSSESS debut with Balzer + Bray for HarperCollins, August 23, 2011. Her second novel, TEN – YA horror/suspense about ten teens trapped on a remote island with a serial killer – is tentatively scheduled for a Fall 2012 release. Top Ten Fictional Crushes

Oh, I love this topic. Love, love, love. I’m going to do this countdown-style…

10. Batman. Okay, seriously? Seriously. Look, I can’t help it. The dude is buff, badass and ever so slightly broken. And the fact that he’s been played by Christian Bale and George Clooney doesn’t exactly hurt.

9. Jace. (Mortal Instruments series by Cassie Clare) Is there a Top Ten Fictional Crushes list that doesn’t have Jace on it? I’d like to see it. His mix of sex appeal and snark is irresistible.

8. Willoughby. (Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen) I totally threw you with this one, didn’t I? Not Mr. Darcy. Not Colonel Brandon. Not Captain Wentworth, but Willoughby? *sigh* Yes. I can’t help it. Like Marianne Dashwood, I’m a sucker for (a) fixed male attention and (b) someone who understands and encourages my ridiculous flights of fancy. There’s just something so utterly romantic about their courtship and even in their inevitable demise. With guys like Willoughby it’s always high highs and low lows.

7. Peeta. (Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins) Clearly Team Peeta. Clearly.

6. Mr. Thornton. (North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell) Mr. Thornton is the Mr. Darcy in Gaskell’s class struggle reboot of Pride and Prejudice. What gets me about John Thornton (and the reason I’d choose him over Darcy in a heartbeat) is that he’s a self-made man. Pulled himself up from nothing, educating himself along the way. He’s tough. He’s street smart. He’s tall and hot. (hee) And I want to punch Margaret in the face every time she turns him down.

5. Laurie. (Little Women by Louisa May Alcott) NO HE CAN’T MARRY AMY! HE CAN ONLY MARRY JO! IN MY MAKE BELIEVE WORLD HE STILL MARRIES JO!!!!

4. Sirius Black. (Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling) The bad boy with a heart of gold. Brave, steadfast, raised to be evil but turns his back on his family. Survives a decade in prison and manages to break out to save Harry… Oh yes, and Gary Oldman. I mean, the guy’s played Beethoven and Sid Vicious. How can I not be madly-but-superficially in love with him?

3. Captain Mal. (“Firefly” created by Joss Whedon) Hot. Just, hot. Just…yeah. I need a cigarette.

2. Heathcliff. (Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte) Oh, this was the end of hope for any kind of normal dating life when I read this at age sixteen. Heathcliff, the possibly psychotic, severely damaged anti-hero was like crack cocaine for teenaged me. Brooding, obsessive, dark and complex. Boyfriend material? Um…

1. Gilbert Blythe. (Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery) You know why Gilbert Blythe is still at the top of my list? Because he was in love with Anne not for her looks, not for her shenanigans, but for her brain. Gilbert loved that Anne was smart. He loved competing against her. He loved sparring with her. He loved that he’d found someone so perfectly his equal. That, in my humble opinion, is exactly what true love should be.

WOW! I love this list and all the explanations. I have to agree on Batman and Peeta and a few of the classics.
