Today on day 4 of the Halloween Booktacular, Author Lisa Sanchez wrote a special Halloween post for you all to enjoy. Then Thanks to the wonderful Omnific Publishing we have 1 ebook set of Lisa's The Hanaford Park Series. So you'll get Eve of Samhain (book 1) and Pleasures Untold (book 2) from the series. If your not familiar with Lisa's writing then your in for a treat, this series is a sexy paranormal romance.
Okay, so I’m going to make a surprising confession. I may write paranormal, but really, I’m a total scaredy-cat. Yep, I’m one of those people who will watch a scary movie with their fingers covering their eyes the entire time while repeatedly whispering “is the bad part over yet?” Uh-huh…totally annoying. I know. I’m also the girl who will stay up late reading the latest and greatest paranormal romance, and then lay awake the entire night because I’m too creeped out to close my eyes. The ghoul from chapter seven might really be under my bed, and as soon as I close my peepers it’ll crawl out and devour me.
Sounds funny, right? You think I’m joking here, yes? Uh…no. Sadly, the above is all true. Closet doors need to be closed, or I freak out. I can’t sleep with my foot hanging over the edge of the bed. Someone, or should I say, some thing might grab me and hack me to pieces. Yep…sigh… I’m a real sissy. A total pantywaist. But, you know what? That’s okay. I may scare easily, but I don’t let it keep me from enjoying a good paranormal read, or scary, suspenseful flick. And I certainly don’t let it hold me back from enjoying one of my favorite holidays: Halloween.
Truth is, most people (even sissy girls like me) enjoy a good scare every once in a while. And no, I’m not talking about real life scares or things that worry us in our day-to-day lives. I think it’s safe to say we could all do with less of those! I’m talking about the ripple of fear that crawls across your skin when you’re deep into a particularly creepy scene in a book and the hair on the back of your neck stands on end. Or maybe even the breathless, flight or fight sensation that washes over you when you’re watching a movie and the hapless victim is about to meet a bloody end. Those scenes, those suspenseful moments, if written/done right, elicit emotion. I don’t know about you, but if I’ve had a particularly long day with the kids, or a bunch of stressors weighing heavily on my mind, I find it incredibly enjoyable to escape into a fantasy world where the author/filmmaker is able to make me feel something other than the drudgery of day-to-day life.
Case in point: A few years back… Well, actually, it’s been more than a few years (I’m totally aging myself here) I went to see Signs with a good friend. In case you haven’t seen it, this is an M. Night Shyamalan movie with Mel Gibson (before he went off the deep end) and Joaquin Phoenix. I don’t want to spoil the movie for anyone who might want to see it, but I will say this: I spent a good week after completely unable to use my daughter’s baby monitor for fear I’d hear something scary on the other end. Major creep factor. See what I mean, though? The movie left a lasting impression on me. It elicited emotion, and I remember it vividly to this day.
I truly believe these are just a few of the reasons we love Halloween so much. Along with the parties, the costumes and the candy (Oh, dear Lord, the candy…) it’s the thrill that comes with a good fictional scare that jars us awake, brings us to life and makes us feel. And feeling, I’m sure you’ll agree, is very, very good!
Happy Halloween, everyone!
Oh wow Lisa, you and me are the exact same. I am a big scary cat but every once in a while like to watch a movie or read a book like that and just deal with the non-sleeping. I also have a few sleepless night after watching Signs also, it was Uber Creepy! Lisa if you haven't seen The New Daughter with Kevin Costner, you must watch it. Its creepy like Signs.
Thank you Lisa and Omnific Publishing for this treat. You can read a interview with Lisa on Omnific's website HERE. To learn more about Lisa and her books, visit her website.

I could NEVER finish watching those Chucky movies. They always creeped me out and I couldn't sleep. I will still change the channel faster than greyhound out of the gate if I see it on. Can't stand CHUCKY. Stupid doll!
ReplyDeleteI'm such a scaredy cat when it comes to movies. I can't watch horror films.
ReplyDeleteI love spooky books though - werewolves, vampires, ghosts ... I love them all.
Thanks for having me on your blog today, Yara! And thanks for the movie rec! I'll totally check it out!
ReplyDeleteI don't really watch or read too many scary movies/books, but I do remember being really afraid of The Exorcist and will never be watching that again.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great giveaway & HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

ReplyDeleteLove EOS and PU!!!
I haven't exactly read a witch book yet! LOL
ReplyDeleteStephen King - anything by him is crazy scary.
ReplyDeleteHell Raiser scares me. Tore923@aol.com
ReplyDeleteI couldn't tell you which movie it was. It was a 60 or 70's vampire movie I watched when I was a kid. I don't really watch super scary movies as an adult. Stephen King's IT mini series was scary, but I didn't expect a clown to get in the house, so it didn't keep me up at night.
ReplyDeleteSo I just watched Paranormal Activity 3 the other night. Now the first two were dumb and didn't scare me and while the third was just as dumb it still scared the crap out of me D: I haven't been able to sleep these past couple of nights and I don't think this weekend is looking to good either :(
ReplyDeleteI am still frightened of the Blair Witch, lol. I know it wasn't the most terrifying but going home to a dark farm made it all the worse. I love supernatural scary movies but one with everyday regular people being slaughtered is too much for my wandering imagination.
ReplyDeleteBook - Salems Lot
ReplyDeletemovie - The Exocist
