Welcome to our stop in Daniel Waters' Break My Heart 1,000 Times blog tour. The tour is hosted by Authors on the Web. Today we feature a Q&A with Daniel.
OUaT: What do you do when you are not writing?
Daniel Waters: If I'm not writing, I'm thinking about writing, or reading so I can be a better writer, or running so I can live long enough to write more books. Or singing jaunty tunes.
OUaT: How did you choose the genre you write in?
Daniel Waters: I think the genre chose me, at least if you consider YA a genre. I was oblivious to the fact that Generation Dead was a YA novel when I wrote it; my agent told me it was a YA novel. Then a shaft of golden light pierced through the ceiling and once bathed in its scintillating glow I realized that I would rather write about and for young people most of the time, anyway.
OUaT: How did you come up with the title?
Daniel Waters: On one level, Break My Heart 1,000 Times is a novel about loss; I think people who have deep losses in their lives tend to experience them over and over again, on anniversaries of both the loss and of the happier times that are now gone. I was thinking of a personal loss that I'd experienced that I relive over and over again and when I tried to write about how I felt about it, I wrote that it was like breaking my heart a thousand times over. This sentiment became a line in the novel as well as the title.
OUaT: Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?
Daniel Waters: I love the world of Break My Heart 1,000 Times and I will definitely revisit it someday.
OUaT: Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?
Daniel Waters: I would like to say thank you, especially to those of you who emailed or posted on www.danielwaters.com andwww.mysocalledundeath.com. I really appreciate the chance to hear from you and I really REALLY appreciate the fan art.
OUaT: What do you do to unwind and relax?
Daniel Waters: Write. I love writing; it can tighten me up or unwind me, excite or relax me. I also run and bliss out with the headphones on.
OUaT: Tell us your latest news?
Daniel Waters: Directors Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal (The Words) have signed on for the Break My Heart 1,000 Timesmovie, I just received a great pilot script for a possible Generation Dead television show, and I've got more novels ready to publish. And I'm running 9 and a half minute miles, anywhere between 3 and 6 of them four or five days a week, which is great for me. S'all good.
