The prologue opens in Manchester, England with Jessica (17) hiding in the shadows of the park watching a boy sitting on a bench outside her neighborhood cricket club. He has tears streaming down his face. Jessica is grieving as she watches her ex boyfriend (Luke) mourn her death. Part of her is aching to touch him and comfort him. But she stays in the shadows because the other part of her wants to hold his head, breathe in his smell and bite him so that his warm blood will rush into her mouth.
As chapter one opens up Jess is at a local university bar with her best friend Alex. As she is checking out the people in the bar she locks eyes and has a connection with a stranger. Even though she feels a pull towards him she thinks of her boyfriend Luke and walks the other way. Within a few minutes the stranger seeks her out and introduces himself as Daniel. Though he is gorgeous and she is definitely attracted, Jess again thinks of Luke and walks away. She starts searching the bar for Alex but can't find her anywhere. She decides to leave the bar and head home. While walking home on her own Jessica is attacked and left for dead by a vicious gang of girls. As Jessica lay dying she is saved by Daniel, who it turns out is a vampire. He "turns" her while she is breathing her last breath but from the very beginning Jessica doesn't respond like a "normal" new vampire. She sleeps to much. She has no compulsion to "bite" anyone, preferring the bagged blood. She is still craving food and she is still very pulled to her human life, family and friends.
As more and more differences start to be revealed, Jessica becomes a prize coveted by the supernatural world. The vampires want her for her powers and the witches want to control her. Her human family also has secrets that must be discovered as she tries to piece together her past, present and future. Even her ex boyfriend, Luke, is revealed to be a fallen angel sent to watch her for signs of her witches power. Luke's hidden agenda and betrayal cut Jess deep. Daniel becomes her rock during this turbulent time. But Jess must also determine if his motives are driven by love or something more sinister. As she lets go of Luke she must determine if her feelings for Daniel are real or part of the blood bond they share.
Emma Mills did a great job with this book. It was a page turner filled with twists and turns that i didn't see coming. I do want to mention that some of the sexual feelings that Jess struggles with are probably more geared to 15/16 years old and up. Nothing to explicit but Jess' sexuality is definitely tied in to her feelings for Luke and Daniel.
