Summary: (from goodreads) Don’t Sweat. Don’t Laugh. Don’t draw attention to yourself. And most of all, whatever you do, do not fall in love with one of them.
Gene is different from everyone else around him. He can’t run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn’t hurt him and he doesn’t have an unquenchable lust for blood. Gene is a human, and he knows the rules. Keep the truth a secret. It’s the only way to stay alive in a world of night—a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.
When he’s chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene’s carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him. He’s thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible—and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever—but is it worth the cost of his humanity?
Thoughts on audio portion: The reason this book got a 3 instead of a 4 had a lot to do with the reader's voice. I had to set aside the voice and just listen with an open mind. The issue with the reader's voice was that he sounded too old for the part. The main character is a young guy and the voice did not go at all with his character, I felt like I was listening to his grandfather instead. I feel bad to have to put that out there but its the truth. What saved the story and that I finished it, was the actual story itself. So would I recommend listening to The Hunt in audio, probably not. Now would I recommend grabbing the book and reading it yourself, YES!
Now on to my thoughts of the story itself: The Hunt was a combination of Paranormal and Dystopian. The story is set in a future world where the Vampires oversee over the "Heepers" (that would be us the Humans). Those Heepers that have managed to live amongst the Vampires are completely in disguise. There lives depend on them being perfect at pretending to be a Vampire. Not all are lucky and get discovered by the time they hit middle school or even high school. There are very few Heepers in existence according to the Vampires. So those that are amongst the vampire must real keep the charades going for life.
The Hunt follow Gene, he is a Heeper but since he was born until now he was taught by his father how to be a vampire, so he would never be detected. Gene is now on his own and knows every thing there is to know about staying undetected. He wears fake fangs, shaves his body of all hairs, scrubs all smells off and has learn how to mimic the vampires in all their ways. This is all Gene has known all his life, so it has become second nature to him, he might even at times forget he is a Heeper and think himself a Vampire. Everything is going as plan for Gene everyday until the school and everyone get ready for who will be chosen to participate in the famous Heeper Hunt. When they announce who will be those lucky vampires that will get to hunt down the Heepers and eat, drink and mutilate them. Gene is picked! Trust me when I say that is a FML moment for Gene. He is immediately taken away by the Heeper Hunt officials to the limo to be taken to the institute. Gene is not panicking in front of them, but he has no idea what he will do without any of his supplies that he needs to maintain himself undiscoverable. Then to add to the huge problem he faces, Ashely June from his school also got picked and she has always had a thing for Gene.
Things just go from 1 to 100 in no time once Gene gets to the Institute and has to figure out ways of staying cloaked. During all this Gene begins to uncover secrets and facts and begins to remember who he really is. Who will Gene depend on, if he even has anyone. The Hunt will keep you wondering what next and the ending will gets you salivating for book 2 - The Prey.
