Baby, It's Cold Outside Author Interviews

OUaT: How does it differ to write a story with a holiday theme as to no holiday theme?

Aimee: The most notable difference is you have to work a little harder to get into the ‘mood’ of the story. It’s difficult to feel the holiday spirit when you’re sweating through a summer heat wave! What was really fun was brainstorming with my fellow authors and hearing how they celebrate the holidays. With two Brits, an Aussie, and a Yank, this was a fascinating intercultural exchange.

Kate: I think the holiday season puts that little bit of extra pressure on your characters (I guess as it does in real life) and it makes the tension between them rise a little bit more. Especially for my characters, because they have such differing viewpoints about Christmas.

Heidi: I adore doing holiday themed stories, especially Christmas ones, because that wonderful feeling of excitement and expectation that the season brings with it adds a warm, tingly, glow to your romance before you've even started writing the story — and then of course there's the prospect of snow to consider. Because where there's snow, there's usually snuggling (or there certainly is in these stories).

Amy: For a start it gives you an instant idea of the “type” of story you’re going to write. And I think a holiday themed story already comes pre-packaged with emotion. Family and holiday are hopelessly intertwined so any disconnect between these two will already have the reader engaged and worried for your characters. You don’t have to contrive or manufacture emotion – it’s inbuilt!

OUaT: What is your favorite scene or lines from your short story in the anthology?

Aimee: This one is easy. The opening scene as the heroine, Evie, is freaking out before her plane takes off. The interaction between her, the hero, and the flight attendant was just a blast to write!

Kate: The snow angel :o) We don't often have a white Christmas in the UK, so my heroine's reaction to being snowed in is quite similar to how mine would be!

Heidi: No fair, can I only pick one? Oh all right then. Well, while I loved writing every scene, I had particular fun writing the scene where - once Kate and Ryder have discovered they're trapped together in a deserted department store on Christmas night - Ryder insists they should help themselves to whatever they need to survive:

“But won’t this put us on Santa’s naughty list?” Kate said, surprising herself with the flirtatious comment.

Ryder snorted out a laugh and hauled her closer. “Katherine, I’m counting on it.”

Amy: I have two favourite scenes in the novella. The first one is where a slightly tipsy Tamara attacks Luke with a golf stick because she thinks he’s trying to break into the cabin and loot it. The second is the strip scrabble game J

OUaT: If you could chose to spend a holiday anywhere you want and with any fictional/celebrity persona, where and who would you chose? and why?

Aimee: Oh, I’d spend it with the boys from Supernatural. First, I’d get to ride along in Dean’s 1967 Impala. I just adore vintage muscle cars, and a little thrill skips through my veins every time I hear that engine start on the show. Second, instead of a traditional holiday – which I do every year and will do the rest of my life – I’d get to tagalong on a hunt. I think I’d like to gank the Ghost of Christmas Future, because he was such a dire old dude. And Third, I’d get watch to watch Dean, Sam, and Castiel in action – so I’d get to admire three hunky men all at the same time!

Kate: Antonio Banderas. Because I've adored him for years and years.(This is where my fellow Flirtettes are going to fall about laughing because they KNEW I'd pick him. And it's not because he's very easy on the eye and has that gorgeous voice - he really does come across as a nice guy in interviews and I love the way he clearly adores his wife and is a real family man.) And because we're learning to tango in ballroom dance class next term, and I'd love him to teach me just a little bit like the one he danced in 'Take the Lead'.

Heidi: No question, it's gotta be Christmas with Superman in the Fortress of Solitude. Why? Because he looks like Henry Cavill, he can fly and, well, he's Superman.

Amy: Oh that’s easy – I would very much like George Clooney to show me around all his favourite haunts around the Italian lakes. Why? Because he’s George freaking Clooney and I used to be a Roman Goddess in a past life.
