Summary: (from goodreads) When sixteen year old Poppy Douglas writes a song about her ex-boyfriend Cam and ex-friend Nikki, she has no idea that her heartbreak is about to go global.
A local band picks up her song from Youtube and soon she’s along for the ride with her own fanbase as they blow up on the local club scene and hit the international charts. Though it turns out leaving Cam behind isn’t as easy as she had hoped.
Tangled in a web of unfinished homework, ill-considered sexting and a new lead-singer boyfriend, Poppy has a choice to make between the ex that inspired it all and the rock God whose poster lines the inside of half the lockers at school. But as she struggles to keep her emotional dirty laundry private, she learns that the truth can be hard to find when your life is in the headlines.
A few days later, while riding the bus to school with a group of prep school boys, Poppy's other best friend Maddie (a.k.a. Mads) pushes Poppy to tell her who she is "in like" with since the bad break from Cam. Poppy tries to buy her friend off by pointing at one of the random prep school boys but Mads won't stop there. When Poppy and the boy get off at the same bus stop, Mads insists that Poppy talk to him. After what could be the most awkward and embarrassing meeting between two people ever, Poppy finally introduces herself to Ty. It turns out Ty is the lead singer of a band called Academy of Lies and after realizing that Poppy is in fact PoppyLongStocking, Ty asks if she would mind if his band performed The Kiss Off at their upcoming concert. She agrees, exchanges phone numbers with him and in return he agrees to get Poppy and any friends she wants into their show, at his expense.
Poppy is tormented throughout the story by the sight of Cam and his new girlfriend Nikki. She is torn by her remaining feelings for Cam and what now appears to be going on between her and Ty. The Kiss Off, as performed by The Academy of Lies takes off and becomes wildly popular. Overnight they are plunged into super stardom and Poppy is dubbed by the media as Ty's muse. Poppy and Ty quickly learn that the media and more specifically the paparazzi are not your friend when you hit the fast track to super stardom. Separated by cities, in a world where there are gorgeous celebrities and fans constantly throwing themselves at your rock star boyfriend and people who actually want to be Poppy just because of who she's dating, she must figure out if her relationship is worth the chaos. But more importantly, she must decide if she truly wants Ty or if he was just the rebound guy as she waits for Cam to be single again.
This was such a cute book. I love the way the author wrote the story. She wrote it as if you were inside the head of a sixteen year old girl. I loved Poppy using her music as an outlet to send a message, even though as most of us know all too well these days, the Internet is not the place to air your dirty laundry. The story is filled with teen angst, heartache and heartbreak. I felt like I was sixteen again, crushing on the most beautiful boy I've ever seen and not so secretly hating the guy who broke my heart. I've actually read the ending to the book three times just because it made my toes curl and my heart flutter. At its heart, this is a love story and no matter which guy you decide to root for, you won't be disappointed you picked this one up! There is a sequel set for 2013 and I for one can't wait to read it.
