I am thrilled to be writing this review finally. Why? because that means I was able to read The Vicious Deep after having it on my shelf for a long time now. It's very hard when your a blogger to fit a book that isn't sent to you for review into your reading schedule. So last year I bought The Vicious Deep and it's been sitting on my shelf for over a year now. What made me finally read it, well I got to see Zoraida at BEA this year and actually got a personalized copy this time, then a few days ago she informed me on twitter that my name would appear in book 3; The Vast and Brutal Sea. So I HAD to read it ASAP. That totally made my day when she tweeted me (see below)! Will the river mermaid that has my name be good or evil, I have no clue but I can't wait to read and find out! Hmmm maybe she can get a kiss from Tristan at least.
So with that news, I knew I had to get on it and read the book. So I was able to fit it and so glad I did. I absolutely loved books that are centered around the sea, mermaids and anything under the water pretty much. It must be a combination of me being Pisces and the meaning of my name in Brazil meaning Water Goddess or Siren. So once I dived into the pages of The Vicious Deep I was immediately seized by the story. It starts off with a bang when main character Tristan, Coney Island's too hot for himself bad-ass swimmer gets swept out to sea when a freak storm hits the shore. Tristan goes missing for 3 days then somehow appears on the sandy shore again, unscathed and what he remember is a silver-haired mermaid with sharp shark teeth. Tristan believes he has lost his mind. Of course he knows he feels out of whack but he blames it on the storm and being lost at sea until Tristan changes and grows a tail and gills. Yup, you read that right, Tristan turns out to be a merman and this is when his mother let's him in on a family secret. Tristan's mom used to be a mermaid herself until she was striped of her tail to live a normal life with Tristan's human father. This was not suppose to happen to him, Tristan's grandfather the Sea King promised his daughter that he would not turn, guess that didn't work out so well for them. Seems the Sea King needs his grandson to have a tail and gills so he can try and win over the trident to become the future Sea King. Poor Tristan has to deal with all this all of a sudden and still try and graduate high school and win his swim meets.
The journey that Tristan will need to begin will introduce him to a new world that is as much a part of him as he is to the human world. Can a half-human, half merman be able to juggle high school, swimming and becoming the champion to be Sea King and I almost forgot love too? You'll have to read The Vicious Deep to see where this adventure takes Tristan and those helping him out.
Zoraida captures the mind of a teenage boy and now merman extremely well. It was a treat to be able to read and laugh at Tristan's humor while being in his mind. Tristan one minute is worried about something so profound as finding a piece of the Trident and then all the sudden could be worrying about something so silly as to where his you know what goes when he shifts into a merman. I also loved visiting Coney Island, Zoraida did a perfect job describing it with her vivid words. It felt like I was visiting there myself and swimming alongside Tristan.
Now begins my new issue as to when I can fit in The Savage Blue into my reading schedule. I have a feeling whatever book is next on my TBR pile will be getting bumped. This is a PERFECT read for the summer and beach!
Remember when I said I bought the book last year but didn't get a chance to read it and then I went to BEA this year and got a personalized copy? Well know what that means, I can give away the hardcover I bought last year a reader. Sharing is caring, right? I'd love for this copy to go home to someone who has yet to read this series and will love it as much as I do now. Good Luck!
