Summary: After a virus claimed nearly the entire global population, the world changed. The United States splintered into fifty walled cities where the surviving citizens clustered to start over. The Company, which ended the plague by bringing a life-saving vaccine back from the future, controls everything. They ration the scant food and supplies through a lottery system, mandate daily doses of virus suppressant, and even monitor future timelines to stop crimes before they can be committed.

Brilliant but autistic, sixteen-year-old Clover Donovan has always dreamed of studying at the Waverly-Stead Academy. Her brother and caretaker, West, has done everything in his power to make her dream a reality. But Clover’s refusal to part with her beloved service dog denies her entry into the school. Instead, she is drafted into the Time Mariners, a team of Company operatives who travel through time to gather news about the future.

When one of Clover’s missions reveals that West’s life is in danger, the Donovans are shattered. To change West’s fate, they’ll have to take on the mysterious Company. But as its secrets are revealed, they realize that the Company’s rule may not be as benevolent as it seems. In saving her brother, Clover will face a more powerful force than she ever imagined and will team up with a band of fellow misfits and outsiders to incite a revolution that will change their destinies forever.

Viral Nation has one of the most different and creative dystopian plots I have ever read. Complete with a heart-stopping virus, deceptive and evil government officials, time traveling that has saved people in present time from murder, or banks from being robbed, and has even revealed a cure for the virus, formerly abused orphans escaped from their cruel house parents, and secrets held by only the first time traveler, who brought back the cure to save all people from the virus. Viral Nation is new and exciting, and I welcomed it to my book shelves with no hesitation.

Sixteen year-old, Clover Donovan, is a bright autistic teen that has been accepted into the Waverly-Stead Academy . Once she is allowed into the academy with full boarding it is almost as if the academy changes its mind about letting Clover partake in the studies; Headmaster, Adam Kingston, confronts Clover at orientation and tells her how she is “not right” for the school. Clover is devastated, and believes her refusal is part of not wanting to part with her much-loved service dog, Mango. Instead of school, Clover- with Mango by her side- gets drafted into the Time Mariner program. Clover transports through the portal, to two years into the future with other experienced Mariners and brings back messages to and from the future and the present. However, as appealing time traveling may be it’s about to reveal a secret that will change her, and her brother’s life forever and lead them to more discoveries about their oh-so-perfect Company than ever before.

Shaunta Grimes fully delivers in this original, captivating novel. Once you start reading Viral Nation you will not be able to put it down. This book will also appeal to wider audiences due to its diversity in plot and characters. From Science Fiction fans to Animal Lovers, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an outstanding read. Grimes will leave you begging for a sequel.

About the Author: Shaunta Grimes has worked as a substitute teacher, a newspaper reporter, a drug court counselor, and a vintage clothing seller. No matter which direction she strays, however, she always comes back to storytelling. She lives in Reno with her family, where she writes, teaches, and perpetually studies at the University of Nevada. Viral Nation is her debut traditionally-published novel.

I have one question for Shaunta - where did the idea for this book come from and how long did it take you to write it? Also, was it easy or difficult to find a publisher? Okay sorry that was more than one question!
