Charlie Hanson has a clear vision of his future. A senior at Brighton School of Mathematics and Science, he knows he’ll graduate, go to MIT, and inevitably discover solutions to the universe’s greatest unanswered questions. He’s that smart. But Charlie’s future blurs the moment he reaches out to touch the tattoo on a beautiful girl’s neck.
The future has never seemed very kind to Charlotte Finch, so she’s counting on the present. She’s not impressed by the strange boy at the donut shop—until she learns he’s a student at Brighton where her sister has just taken a job as the English teacher. With her encouragement, Charlie orchestrates the most effective prank campaign in Brighton history. But, in doing so, he puts his own future in jeopardy.
By the time he learns she's ill—and that the pranks were a way to distract Ms. Finch from Charlotte’s illness—Charlotte’s gravitational pull is too great to overcome. Soon he must choose between the familiar formulas he’s always relied on or the girl he’s falling for (at far more than 32 feet per second squared).

Today we’re going to play What if? with Charles Hanson and Charlotte Finch from Love and Other Unknown Variables.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Charlie: Switzerland.
Charlotte: (turning her face toward Charlie, her brow wrinkled) Do you ski?
Charlie: (snorting) No.
Charlotte: Then why Switzerland?
Charlie: (blushing and mumbling) There’s cool physics stuff at CERN.
Charlotte: (smiling) I’ll go to France. I want to see the Louvre.
If you could watch your favorite movie now, what would it be?
Charlie: Anything Joss Whedon.
Charlotte: (singing) Oh, I’m singing in the rain, just singing in the rain.
If you could live in any period of history, when would it be?
Charlie: Now. The advances were making—
Charlotte: Now? You can’t pick now!
Charlie: (looking smug) I just did.
Charlotte: (scoffing) Fine. I want to live during the Reinassance.
Charlie: (nose wrinkling) But there were no toilets. And didn’t they use like leeches for medicine?
Charlotte: Leeches are way less scary than some of the stuff we’ve got now.
Charlie: And less effective.
Charlotte: It’s a game, Charlie. Stop being so logical about everything.
If you could change anything about yourself, what would you change?
Charlie: (cutting an icy look at Charlotte) I’d be less logical.
Charlotte: I’d be less abrasive.
If you had to be allergic to something, what would it be?
Charlie: Brussel sprouts.
Charlotte: (holding her hand up for a high five) Ditto.
If you could eat your favorite food now, what would it be?
Charlie: Pizza
Charlotte: Cupcakes
If you were sent to live on a space station for three months and only allowed to bring three personal items with you, what would they be?
Charlie: In space? What three things would I bring to space? Am I to assume I already have a proper suit, oxygen, and food?
Charlotte: Oh my god! You’re killing the game! Next question!
If you could buy a car right now, what would you buy?
Charlie: One that is less than ten years old.
Charlotte: (chuckling) A fast one.
If you had one day to live over again, what day would you pick?
Charlie: (eyeing Charlotte) Do I get to change the day or do I just watch it over and over?
Charlotte: Does it matter?
Charlie: Yes.
Charlotte: You get to change it.
Charlie: (taking a deep breath) I’d relive the day we first met.
Charlotte: (brow wrinkling) You would?
Charlie: (nodding) I’d be braver.
Charlotte: (a small smile spreading across her lips) Provided that whole change one thing about yourself thing has come true, I’d be way nicer to you.
