Sometimes secrets kill. Maybe slowly, maybe painfully. Maybe all at once.
Melissa smiles. She flirts. She jokes. But she never shows her scars. Eight months after tragedy ripped her from her closest friend, Melissa is broken. Inside her grows a tumor, fed by grief, rage, and the painful memory of a single forbidden kiss.
Javier has scars of his own: a bullet wound, and the memory of a cousin shot in the heart. Life in the States was supposed to be a new beginning, but a boy obsessed by vengeance has no time for the American dream. To honor his familia, Javier joins the gang who set up his cousin's murder. The entrance price is blood. Death is the only escape.
These two broken souls could make each other whole again - or be shattered forever. Our time will come. And we'll be ready.
The premise of the book is what really made me want to read this book. "These two broken souls could make each other whole again - or be shattered forever. Our time will come. And we'll be ready." I'm hooked!
I love a good book with a dual POV and I wasn't let down with this one. At first I couldn't decide if I liked reading Melissa's part more or Javier, but in the end I decided I liked both just as much. The characters were very unique, but also fit so well together. You cry for Javier and the situation that he's been put into and hope that Melissa will be able to move on from the death of her friend. When the two come together, your heart soars.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I didn't get a chance to read the first one this series, but I will definitely check it out after this one!
You should read the first one! It is my favorite one. But now you were spoiled because you read this book! Not nice, Laura. You will still like it though :) I made a book review on my blog and a video review as well, both you can find here :) I hope you enjoy my thoughts on the first book and I hope you enjoy it when you read it.
ReplyDeleteI'm always looking for a good YA book to read. Is this one "clean" enough for 6th graders?
