The book that inspired the hit film!

Sundance U.S. Dramatic Audience Award

Sundance Grand Jury Prize

This is the funniest book you’ll ever read about death.

It is a universally acknowledged truth that high school sucks. But on the first day of his senior year, Greg Gaines thinks he’s figured it out. The answer to the basic existential question: How is it possible to exist in a place that sucks so bad? His strategy: remain at the periphery at all times. Keep an insanely low profile. Make mediocre films with the one person who is even sort of his friend, Earl.

This plan works for exactly eight hours. Then Greg’s mom forces him to become friends with a girl who has cancer. This brings about the destruction of Greg’s entire life.

Fiercely funny, honest, heart-breaking—this is an unforgettable novel from a bright talent, now also a film that critics are calling "a touchstone for its generation" and "an instant classic."

Recently, this book has been getting so much buzz due to its movie debut, and after watching the trailer, it seemed like something I would want to read anyway. It did not disappoint. It's witty, sarcastic, hilarious, and purely honest.

Greg S. Gaines is the "Me" in the title and the narrator. I don't know how the author got into such a mindset to write like this character, but it is brilliant. There are no gaps in Greg; this character is so consistent. He carries out this persona of a slightly socially awkward, insecure senior in high school. It's great. You're reading the book and it feels like you're just talking to a friend. A strange, introverted friend, but a friend.

The real meat of the story begins when Rachel, an old friend of Greg's, gets leukemia. Now, Greg makes it very clear from the beginning that this is not a story about a girl who beats the odds and falls madly in love with her new found friend via cancer.

In fact, Rachel has very little dialogue in this story. This story really is about how Greg learns about himself by having this experience with Rachel. Also how Greg and his friend Earl grow together. It's a beautiful story. Even though the topic of death is something that comes up frequently, it's still one of the most hilarious things I have ever read. Greg's lack of confidence mixed with Earl's blunt personality is the best combination of characters I have seen in a long time.

However, due to this book being written as if the narrator were speaking to you, it got a bit rambly in some parts and some part were a bit irrelevant. Even if they still made me laugh out loud.

There's so much more that could be said about this book, but you'll just have to read it for yourself to understand the full gravity of it.

Also, Earl may just be my favorite character of all time.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL is the uniquely funny, moving story of Greg (Thomas Mann), a high school senior who is trying to blend in anonymously, avoiding deeper relationships as a survival strategy for navigating the social minefield that is teenage life. He even describes his constant companion Earl (RJ Cyler), with whom he makes short film parodies of classic movies, as more of a 'co-worker’ than a best friend. But when Greg’s mom (Connie Britton) insists he spend time with Rachel (Olivia Cooke) – a girl in his class who has just been diagnosed with cancer - he slowly discovers how worthwhile the true bonds of friendship can be.

Audiobook Review: Mortal Danger by Ann Aguirre

Mortal Danger
Immortal Game #2
Author: Ann Aguirre
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Supernatural
Released: August 5th 2014

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Edie Kramer has a score to settle with the beautiful people at Blackbriar Academy. Their cruelty drove her to the brink of despair, and four months ago, she couldn't imagine being strong enough to face her senior year. But thanks to a Faustian compact with the enigmatic Kian, she has the power to make the bullies pay. She's not supposed to think about Kian once the deal is done, but devastating pain burns behind his unearthly beauty, and he's impossible to forget.

In one short summer, her entire life changes, and she sweeps through Blackbriar, prepped to take the beautiful people down from the inside. A whisper here, a look there, and suddenly... bad things are happening. It's a heady rush, seeing her tormentors get what they deserve, but things that seem too good to be true usually are, and soon, the pranks and payback turns from delicious to deadly. Edie is alone in a world teeming with secrets and fiends lurking in the shadows. In this murky morass of devil's bargains, she isn't sure who—or what--she can trust. Not even her own mind...

For three miserable years, Edie Kramer had to endured many pranks from her classmates. For three years, she had to go through non-stop humiliation. For three years, she was bullied - with no one to speak for her, with no one to call a friend. At the brink of her insanity, she thinks there is only one way out to end the torture. The only way for her to finally be at peace. Seconds before executing her plan, to jump to her death, a mysterious boy stops her. This mysterious boy offers her a deal; he grants her three wishes to use within the next five years. Whatever she wants, whenever she wants, as long as these are within the next five years. Three favors from WM&G, the mysterious company. This company will change Edie's life for better or for worse.

Revenge never tasted so sweet! But be careful what you wish for. As the story progress, Edie realizes sometimes revenge can end with a bad note - a deadly one.

Mortal Danger is very interesting with a great concept. It has drama, suspense, and mystery. I also appreciated the touch of romance but most of all how this wasn't the main point of the story. I really enjoyed Edie's character. The girl has been through a lot and her self-esteem was very low. With the help of Kian - her mysterious friend - she realizes she is quite an awesome individual. I really liked her from the start and my fondness for her just continued to grow. The pacing of the story was also great. It progress as you turned pages. You are able to see the changes Edie goes through.

Overall, I really enjoyed the audio-book, narrated by Susan Hanfield. She has a great voice and she definitely made the story sound pretty awesome. She really does have the voice you want to continue listening to. Then again, the story was very intriguing and I really cannot wait to read Public Enemies! I'm glad I decided to give this series a try and I think any lover of supernatural should too.

When You're Back
Rosemary Beach #12
Author: Abbi Glines
Reading Level: New Adult
Genre: Romance
Released: June 30th 2015
Review Source: Atria Books

A chance meeting in Rosemary Beach has turned into a fairy-tale romance as Reese prepares to move in with Mase on his family ranch in Texas. With the loving support of the Colts, and her recent discovery that she has family of her own, Reese can finally move on from the dark horrors of her past and into a bright future.

But Aida isn’t going to let that happen. The beautiful blonde has been raised to think of Mase as her cousin, but it’s clear to Reese that Aida doesn’t love Mase like a cousin should.

And then there’s Captain, the inescapable stranger who has connections in Dallas and Rosemary Beach—and who conveniently shows up wherever Reese happens to be. Hot, mysterious, and plain-speaking, Captain isn’t afraid to tell Reese what he thinks about Mase—and how he feels about her.

As the competition for Mase and Reese’s hearts heats up, Reese’s past begins to unravel, illuminating shocking truths that will forever change the lives of the happy couple—and set the final stories of Rosemary Beach in motion.

This is a New Adult romance novel recommended for ages 18+ due to sexual content and mature subject matter.

After a not so great upbringing Reese is finally working towards happiness and having the family she deserves. In When I’m Gone we’re introduced to Reese and Mase; Mase son of rock god Kiro Manning, half-brother to Nan and Harlow and sexy cowboy. Reese a girl whose stronger than most, taken advantage of by her stepdad, and went her whole life with a learning disability undiagnosed; with the two put together Reese hadn’t had much hope for herself or any confidence, until Mase that is, the only person that paid enough attention to see that she was not stupid, something was actually wrong.

So we pick up right after When I’m Gone, Reese has moved onto the farm, she’s got her biological father in her life, and things couldn’t be better with Mase… Until Mase’s sort of cousin shows up and demands a little too much attention, and gets way too emotional when then attention is not focused on herself. And then we’re also introduced (or have we met him before? Briefly perhaps) to the mysterious bad boy, Captain, Blaire’s brother, who definitely gets things a tad messy.

I definitely don’t think Abbi can stay away from those bad boys, she gives us the ever so sweet and sexy Mase, but then she’s gotta add the spice in Captain and definitely wanting us to know more about him, but he can definitely stay away from Reese (back off dude). I never have any complaints when it comes to any Abbi Glines books (seriously, she can do no wrong) but I kind of, sort of, felt like the ending was rushed, or maybe just was missing a chapter. The ending left us with an opening for a new book and new couple, but I wasn’t done with my current couple yet, I needed a little more of their happy ending.

Alright ladies and gents, if you’re reading this and you haven’t read The Rosemary Beach series, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?! And if you have, thank goodness we’re both on the same page, and definitely know what’s up with the amazing Abbi Glines. Mase and Reese, I know your story ends here, but I’m hoping I’ll see you again. Captain I can’t wait to see you again ;) and Abbi I cannot wait to see how you are going to attempt to make us like Nan, you are seriously going to wield magic for that one.

Book Review: Under The Lights by Dahlia Adler

Under The Lights
Daylight Falls #2
Author: Dahlia Adler
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: June 30 2015
Review Source: Spencer Hill Contemporary

Josh Chester loves being a Hollywood bad boy, coasting on his good looks, his parties, his parents' wealth, and the occasional modeling gig. But his laid-back lifestyle is about to change. To help out his best friend, Liam, he joins his hit teen TV show, Daylight Falls...opposite Vanessa Park, the one actor immune to his charms. (Not that he's trying to charm her, of course.) Meanwhile, his drama-queen mother blackmails him into a new family reality TV show, with Josh in the starring role. Now that he's in the spotlight—on everyone's terms but his own—Josh has to decide whether a life as a superstar is the one he really wants.

Vanessa Park has always been certain about her path as an actor, despite her parents' disapproval. But with all her relationships currently in upheaval, she's painfully uncertain about everything else. When she meets her new career handler, Brianna, Van is relieved to have found someone she can rely on, now that her BFF, Ally, is at college across the country. But as feelings unexpectedly evolve beyond friendship, Van's life reaches a whole new level of confusing. And she'll have to choose between the one thing she's always loved...and the person she never imagined she could.

Josh doesn't have any job lined up, and his mother wants to do a reality show but only can get producers to sign on if Josh is on board too. He'd rather go to the many auditions for other films that are not as worthy than do a reality show, which would most likely tank his career. His mother isn't past blackmailing Josh though, and will do anything it takes to get him to sign on. Vanessa, on the other hand, is dealing with her parents disapproval and with her newfound relationship. After meeting Brianna and wanting what she thought was a friendship, it turns out she was really wanting something more.

I did not enjoy this book. I had really wanted to love it, the characters were funny. I feel like if they were real people I would definitely want to hang out with them. But for some reason, as book characters, it just didn't do it for me. As well it might be the fact that I am a film person, and this whole story is about teen actors. I had thought this was a for sure link between me and the characters. But I was unable to relate, and I feel like this was a negative rendition of actors. Yes I know that there are some actors out there that act exactly how these kids do; but there are those who are like Liam, who will hang out with the crowd but will go and be serious about their work. It just rubbed me the wrong way. This could be because of my naivety and love for the film industry and all that surrounds it. But like I said I understand that there are those people like this out there. It just rubbed me wrong.

I feel like Zander is suppose to be Zayn from One Direction. And if he isn't then that is who I was picturing the whole time I was reading this book. My fangirl was showing, that's for sure.

Modern-day sisters discover deadly ancient magic in book 1 of this Falling Kingdoms spin-off series!

Worlds collide in this suspenseful, page-turning Falling Kingdoms spin-off series, which explores a whole new side of Mytica—and an even darker version of its magic.

Crystal Hatcher, Modern-day Toronto: It’s a normal afternoon in her mother’s antique bookshop when Crys witnesses the unthinkable: her little sister Becca collapses into a coma after becoming mesmerized by a mysterious book written in an unrecognizable language.

Maddox Corso, Ancient Mytica: Maddox Corso doesn’t think much of it when he spots an unfamiliar girl in his small village. Until, that is, he realizes that she is a spirit, and he is the only one who can see or hear her. Her name is Becca Hatcher, and she needs Maddox to help get her home.

Farrell Grayson, Modern-day Toronto: Rich and aimless Farrell Grayson is thrilled when the mysterious leader of the ultra-secret Hawkspear Society invites him into the fold. But when he learns exactly what he has to do to prove himself, Farrell starts to question everything he thought he knew about family, loyalty, and himself….

Fate has brought these young people together, but ancient magic threatens to rip them apart.

So yeah, this book is PHENOMENAL! I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT!! It has it all! ALL! From adventures to mystery to romance to OMG WHAT IS GOING ON! Oh, the betrayals! What a sweet taste! But the best thing about this book is the love for a family. What one is capable of doing for a crazy, annoying nerdy-like family member! The sacrifices one is willing to take. Truly love conquers all.

I usually read a book like there is no tomorrow but with A Book of Spirits and Thieves, I had to take my time. This book drew me in like no other book. The book. To read. A book filled with magic. A book filled with wonders.

The characters, they are all loveable. Even the one that is biwitched to follow an evil man. Knowing him, before this spell was cast upon him and seeing how it has affected him, you just want him to battle it out and conquer. Gosh, I loved them all. From the Crys, the girl that tend to ignore her younger sister, Becca. To the Grayson brothers. And who wouldn’t love Maddox?!

Can I just say this - READ A Book of Spirits and Thieves!! A must read! Trust me, you will be thanking me later.

Thank you Morgan Rhodes for sharing such a magical and epic tale. *hugs book* I cannot wait to read more! So GO ON and PURCHASE THIS BOOK NOW!
