There is a world that runs parallel to our own, a world in which the souls of the damned are caged, where they are looked over by the Furies, and where they spend eternity in torment, mirroring the devastation and mayhem they created when alive.

Someone has opened the cage.

The worst of terrors has crossed the barrier that separates our world from theirs, and the Furies send a great, albeit untested warrior—their only son, Alek—to try to bring those souls back. He is young and handsome, headstrong and impulsive, and he won’t be able to do it alone.

Eva has grown up, beautiful and beloved, but surrounded by secrets. First, she will be hunted in an ancient feud that will threaten her life. Then, she will become the hunter.

With the police closing in and two worlds on the verge of crumbling around them, Alek and Eva must find each other, discover the limits of their powers, and work together to save everything they hold dear, including one another. Blending elements of mythology with the dazzling storytelling that her fans have devoured through the House of Night series, Kristin Cast weaves a spellbinding and passionate tale that starts a thrilling new series with an explosive charge.

Amber Smoke was a first for me. I've never read any of her work before, though it's always been on my list, and I regret waiting so long! Apart from the stunning cover, the story was pretty good, too! First off…two words. Greek mythology. That is my thing, guys. Greek mythology is my insa-love and I was thrilled that Amber Smoke incorporated it.

They’ve escaped. The evil have escaped the confines of their cages and threaten to ruin everything. Worlds are facing destruction, complete and utter annihilation. Then, a hero from each realm is chosen to save be exactly that—a hero. To save the worlds. Then, Eva is chosen. A human who has to come to grips with her godly heritage. Can Eva, or Alek for that matter, face the evil which threatens everything? He’s grown up in the life of gods, and she’s a your average college student who was blissfully unaware. They’re opposites, but, I love that.

Kristen Cast built a world of fantasy and threw in mythology and it was ace. Though the main story took place in the real world but begins in Tartarus with the Furies. The mythology was slim throughout the book but the presence was there the whole time, and that was good as the actual setting, to be honest. It’s my guilty pleasure genre and Kristen Cast nailed it! I’m not sure if I can say that I loved the book because it felt like there was something missing, but I have every bit of faith that the second book will kick in and it will be amazeballs.

Though, it wasn’t until near the end that I actually felt like the connection with the characters developed. It proved to be hard to connect with them until the end when it felt like Eva and Alek’s story began.  I’ve got a lot of hope for book two, and that we see more development between the two. I feel like book two is where things are really going to kick in!

  1. I've read several books in the House of Night series, and I'm going to be honest I wasn't the biggest fan of them. But that was also a collaboration with her mother PC Cast, so I wonder if being able to work on her own will change the writing style. I'm interested in reading Amber Smoke, and the fact that it has Greek mythology thrown it totally helps because I'm a mythology buff. Thanks for the honest review!
