Imagine a time when the gods turn a blind eye to the agony of men, when the last of the hellions roam the plains and evil stirs beyond the edges of the map. A time when cities burn, and in their ashes, empires rise.

Alexander, Macedonia’s sixteen-year-old heir, is on the brink of discovering his fated role in conquering the known world but finds himself drawn to newcomer Katerina, who must navigate the dark secrets of court life while hiding her own mission: kill the Queen. But Kat’s first love, Jacob, will go to unthinkable lengths to win her, even if it means competing for her heart with Hephaestion, a murderer sheltered by the prince. And far across the sea, Zofia, a Persian princess and Alexander’s unmet fiancée, wants to alter her destiny by seeking the famed and deadly Spirit Eaters.

Weaving fantasy with the salacious and fascinating details of real history, New York Times bestselling author Eleanor Herman reimagines the greatest emperor the world has ever known: Alexander the Great, in the first book of the Blood of Gods and Royals series.

A story intertwined between characters; following Alexander who wants to prove he is fit to be king, Kat who wants to avenge her mother's death, Jacob who wants to prove he is man enough for Kat, Cyn who wants the magical powers her mother craved, and Heph who is just trying to remain as loyal as he can be to Alexander.

I have a love/hate relationship with this book. And what I love about this book, is honestly what I hate about this book as well. I love the characters and the stories that they each go on. But what drives me insane is how long it takes to get back to certain characters. Such as Zo - her character is a fun one, and yet I feel like there are only 4 or 5 chapters about what is happening to her. I need more Zo!

Heph...I LOVE HEPH! At first I felt weird because I was like yea....I love Heph so much that I want him and Kat to get together. But the more and more I read the more and more I realized that they would be PERFECT together! And I can't wait to see that relationship evolve.

Cyn....while she is not one of my favorite characters I do have to say that I loved her chapters. She is deceitful and yet you learn to care for her. She's cunning and smart, when you're in someone else's chapter you hate her and she gets on your nerves. When you're reading her chapter you love her and feel weird about it....the love/hate relationship that I was talking about.

I honestly can't wait for the sequel, I plan on reading it even if I didn't enjoy this book as much as I could have. I was taken away from the story when it would jump around from chapter to chapter and make me stay away from certain story lines for so long. But since Alex, Kat & Heph's story are some of the more prominent stories, I can't wait to see what happens with them.

  1. I agree with you on this, Zo was awesome! I think the second book will be better since we have gotten the story set up out of the way :)! Nice review!

  2. Personally I love when a book has a lot of main characters in a fantasy and that is what has attracted me. It does sound like a decent story but like it isn't too fast paced either, which might bother me a bit. Great review!
