Book Review: Sealed with a Lie by Kat Carlton

Sealed with a Lie
Two Lies and a Spy # 2
Author: Kat Carlton
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Mystery
Released: September 2nd 2014
Review Source: Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers

In this sequel to the romantic spy-thriller Two Lies and a Spy, Kari must race the clock on a mission to save her little brother.

Kari Andrews thought life was going to get easier. She was wrong. Following the events of Two Lies and a Spy, she and her brother, Charlie, are left to cope with the aftermath while also adapting to a new school—in another country. And then Charlie disappears.

With her brother’s life hanging in the balance, Kari, Evan, Rita, Kale, and some new friends from Generation Interpol (G.I.) are on a race around Europe at the bidding of a voice on a phone. The voice tells them that they need to jailbreak a thief—a flirtatious, hot thief—steal something from a high-security bio lab, and deliver the goods during what’s sure to be a double-cross exchange. Can they succeed before Charlie pays the ultimate price?

Sealed with a Lie is the sequel of Two Lies and a Spy series. One must read the first book to understand what is going on. Onto the review…

Kari’s life seems to be falling apart. Not only did she recently learned her parents are traitors, move to Paris to train to become a spy (like her parents) but now her brother is kidnapped! Sucks for her. To top her non-existing life, she breaks up with her boyfriend. Now Kari must learned how to work with people she does not trust in order to get her brother back. She does everything and anything for Charlie. Such an unconditional love.

Okay, so I honestly liked this one better than the first. I think it’s the fact that she did everything in her power to have her brother back. But like the first, I think her voice is monotone - though she is getting better. I just did not like that she kept repeating that she needed to rescue her brother every other page. I get it. Your brother is kidnapped and you want him back.

Before opening the book, I hoped the story will go into details of her new training school. I believed we were going to learned more of how a spy is trained, but it did not. I was kind of disappointed at this. The ending was really good, which is another reason why I liked the sequel better than the first. Unfortunately I cannot say the ending because it will be a spoiler.

Two Lies and a Spy is an okay series and I hope to be surprised with the last book.

Blog Tour: Playlist for the Dead by Michelle Falkoff | Interview | Giveaway

Welcome to our stop on Playlist for the Dead tour for Michelle Falkoff. This tour is hosted by Rockstar Book Tour.

Playlist for the Dead
Author: Michelle Falkoff
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: January 27th 2015
Review Source: Harper Teen

A teenage boy tries to understand his best friend's suicide by listening to the playlist of songs he left behind in this smart, voice-driven debut novel.

Here's what Sam knows: There was a party. There was a fight. The next morning, his best friend, Hayden, was dead. And all he left Sam was a playlist of songs, and a suicide note: For Sam—listen and you'll understand.

As he listens to song after song, Sam tries to face up to what happened the night Hayden killed himself. But it's only by taking out his earbuds and opening his eyes to the people around him that he will finally be able to piece together his best friend’s story. And maybe have a chance to change his own.

Part mystery, part love story, and part coming-of-age tale in the vein of Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Tim Tharp’s The Spectacular Now, Playlist for the Dead is an honest and gut-wrenching first novel about loss, rage, what it feels like to outgrow a friendship that's always defined you—and the struggle to redefine yourself. But above all, it's about finding hope when hope seems like the hardest thing to find.
Interview:

What can you tell me about your upcoming novel, Playlist for the Dead?

It’s the story of Sam, whose best friend Hayden commits suicide and leaves a playlist of songs behind as a suicide note.  Sam spends most of the book trying to figure out why Hayden did it, and also to find out who’s responsible for taking revenge on the bullies who tormented the two of them.  There might also be wizards.  Just saying.

What is your favorite scene in Playlist for the Dead?

I had a lot of fun writing the scene in Peterson’s Soda Fountain, where Sam and Astrid share some fries and admit they dig each other.  It was lighter than some of the other scenes in the book, and for some reason I’m obsessed with those old-timey places that serve egg creams.  I’ve got a railroad-car diner scene in my next book, complete with starched waitress uniforms and tabletop jukeboxes, though we’ll see if it makes it into the final cut…

If you had a do-over, would you tackle anything differently? (this can be about writing the novel itself (change the ending, plot etc) or about the writing/publishing process overall)

That’s a question with a lot of layers!  The tricky thing about looking-back questions is that, given the ability to go back with hindsight, the answer is always yes.  I’d figure out issues with plot and character faster, giving me more time to revise and hone and finesse and obsess over every little detail.  But if I started over just as myself, with no special knowledge or future-Michelle superpowers?  I’d still be someone who powers through a baggy, messy draft and then sifts through it like someone looking for shiny shells at the beach.  So I try not to look back too much—it tends to just lead to regret, and regret is no fun.

What is an unknown fact about Playlist for the Dead?

I’ve been talking about the book so much that it’s hard to imagine what I haven’t already told people!  Here’s one fact that might be less known: originally, each chapter had a two-line epigraph that signaled a little bit about what Hayden might have been thinking when he included it in the playlist.  As a former copyright lawyer, I should have realized how difficult it would be to get permissions for so many songs, so we ended up taking them out and just leaving the titles.  It makes the playlist a little more cryptic, which might be a plus for some, but I spent SO much time on those two lines, so I’ve been making myself feel better by posting them on Twitter and Facebook.

What can your fans look forward to next?

I’m working on a book about a high school valedictorian who gets blackmailed into being part of a prescription drug ring.  Or at least that’s what it’s about so far.

Book Review: The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds

The Boy in the Black Suit
Author: Jason Reynolds
Reading Level: Young Adult
Genre: Contemporary
Released: January 6, 2015
Review Source: Atheneum Books for Young Readers

Just when seventeen-year-old Matt thinks he can’t handle one more piece of terrible news, he meets a girl who’s dealt with a lot more—and who just might be able to clue him in on how to rise up when life keeps knocking him down—in this wry, gritty novel from the author of When I Was the Greatest.

Matt wears a black suit every day. No, not because his mom died—although she did, and it sucks. But he wears the suit for his gig at the local funeral home, which pays way better than the Cluck Bucket, and he needs the income since his dad can’t handle the bills (or anything, really) on his own. So while Dad’s snagging bottles of whiskey, Matt’s snagging fifteen bucks an hour. Not bad. But everything else? Not good. Then Matt meets Lovey. She’s got a crazy name, and she’s been through more crazy than he can imagine. Yet Lovey never cries. She’s tough. Really tough. Tough in the way Matt wishes he could be. Which is maybe why he’s drawn to her, and definitely why he can’t seem to shake her. Because there’s nothing more hopeful than finding a person who understands your loneliness—and who can maybe even help take it away.

The writing in this book reminded me so much of Gary Paulsen. You may not know that the author of Hatchet actually writes books about kids trying to get out of the projects, but he does. This is a story of a boy who wants to do better with his life after the passing of his mother. The writing matches Paulsen's because from the very beginning you feel like you're living right along with Matt from the very beginning.

At first glimpse of the cover and title, I couldn't tell what the book was going to be about. I thought maybe it was a modern take of Martin Luther King. I thought maybe this took place in the 50's because you really don't see a lot of kids these days wearing black suits. Matt wears the suit because he's working at the funeral home that his mom actually had a service at. It's working at this place and the people that he meets there that helps him move past her death. My grandmother actually passed away last week, so this book really hit home and helped me get through the pain as well.

My favorite character was Lovey because she was exactly what Matt needed to move on and deal with his loss. It was refreshing to have such good characters that seemed so realistic. The problems they faced, their mannerisms, and how they talked were all realistic and authentic. Lovey caught my heart from the beginning and without revealing too much, I didn't think I could handle a part where things went wrong.

I just can't get over how good the writing was. It's authentic, real, and blew me away. I would recommend this book to high school students who are going through hard times, not just death, but hard times in general. Matt could've gone the opposite route after the death of his mom, but he didn't. He surrounded himself with people who would help.

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.
