Can the best thing happen at the worst time?
Her dad went crazy. Her mom left town. She has bills to pay and a little sister to look after. Now is not the time for level-headed seventeen-year-old Lucille to fall in love. But love—messy, inconvenient love—is what she's about to experience when she falls for Digby Jones, her best friend's brother. With blazing longing that builds to a fever pitch, Estelle Laure's soulful debut will keep readers hooked and hoping until the very last page.
I was immediately drawn to This Raging Light because of the beautiful colors on the cover. And, let me tell you, the content on the inside is just as beautiful!
This Raging Light is whirlwind of a ride. Lucille's dad is not so sane and not present, her mom totally abandoned her and her younger sister, and now she's left to deal with it all on her own. Lucille doesn't want to be separated from her sister so she tries her best to keep things at least looking normal. Trying not to give away the fact that neither of her parents are at home taking care of them. I know right, she has it Rough. Capital R. Let's top it off with the other interesting fact that she's in love with a completely unavailable guy! Unavailable as in he has a girlfriend, and he's had her for a while. Like I said- whirlwind.
Laure's writing is completely responsible for me devouring this book in a couple of hours. I was totally enthralled by all the beautiful wording. Although I didn't connect with the characters, I still found myself wanting to be Lucille's thoughts and words. Her storyline of trying to keep herself and her sister together because her parents aren't there was very emotional for me. I couldn't imagine having to deal with that! And yes, I definitely teared up!
Although there are unresolved story lines in the end, that is perfectly fine. This Raging Light is an amazing contemporary novel that you could pick up and finish within a day. Estelle Laure doesn't disappoint when it comes to her writing!
Estelle Laure is a Vonnegut worshipper who believes in love and magic and the power of facing hard truths. She has a BA in Theater Arts from New Mexico State University and an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts, and thinks everyone should have to wait tables or work in a kitchen at least once in their lives. She lives in Taos, New Mexico with her children.
