The Darkest Corners is a psychological thriller about the lies little girls tell, and the deadly truths those lies become. There are ghosts around every corner in Fayette, Pennsylvania. Tessa left when she was nine and has been trying ever since not to think about it after what happened there that last summer. Memories of things so dark will burn themselves into your mind if you let them. Callie never left. She moved to another house, so she doesn’t have to walk those same halls, but then Callie always was the stronger one. She can handle staring into the faces of her demons—and if she parties hard enough, maybe one day they’ll disappear for good. Tessa and Callie have never talked about what they saw that night. After the trial, Callie drifted and Tessa moved, and childhood friends just have a way of losing touch. But ever since she left, Tessa has had questions. Things have never quite added up. And now she has to go back to Fayette—to Wyatt Stokes, sitting on death row; to Lori Cawley, Callie’s dead cousin; and to the one other person who may be hiding the truth. Only the closer Tessa gets to the truth, the closer she gets to a killer—and this time, it won’t be so easy to run away.
Tessa has kept all of her memories in The Darkest Corners of her mind, at least she's tried. It's hard once you've convicted a man for a murder to keep those memories hidden. But when she has to go back to her home town where all the memories were created it digs up new memories and really makes her want to set things right. But she isn't prepared for what that will uncover about her past.
WOW! Holy Cow. This book. It was so amazing. I am absolutely in love with it. I jumped in not sure what I was going to get, and then it turned into a murder mystery and I was hooked. And then Tessa kept uncovering things that made everything a mess but you still sat there going "But WHO DID IT!" and then it all comes out in the open.
Thomas get's you right in Tessa's brain. You're with Tessa for this whole adventure she's on, and you are also thinking like Tessa. I found myself voicing opinions to this book, only to have Tessa pages later say exactly what I was thinking. So props to Thomas for writing a character who, although I've never been in her situation, I was able to connect with.
This book made me want to rethink my career choice because honestly this made detective work seem really fun. I mean clearly there are downfalls to being a detective, but I really enjoyed the sleuthing that happened within The Darkest Corners and now I find myself trying to find small mysteries within my life to sleuth on.
